Suffolk has topped off construction at BioMed Realty’s 585 Kendall a mixed-use lab/office building and performing arts center in the Canal District of Kendall Square in Cambridge, MA. Takeda has leased the property’s approximately 600,000-square-foot lab and office space for its global R&D center.

Set for occupancy in 2026, 585 Kendall is designed to support the diverse needs of the Cambridge community. Its 30,000-square-foot performing arts center is intended to complement the existing, ongoing community activations at Canal District Kendall.

Takeda has broken ground on a $230-million expansion of its Los Angeles production facility. It’s the Japanese pharmaceutical company’s largest plasma fractionation site globally, and the expansion is expected to increase production by two million liters annually.

The expansion will repurpose an existing building and site infrastructure, a move that Takeda believes will significantly reduce the time typically required for planning and permitting new construction. Additionally, the company said it will be able to minimize the environmental impact associated with new construction, reducing waste and promoting responsible resource management.

“The U.S. is playing a critical role in our global manufacturing network and contributing to our supply chain resilience globally,” said Thomas Wozniewski, global manufacturing & supply officer at Takeda. He added that the increased manufacturing capacity at the LA facility will enable Takeda “to produce more plasma-derived therapies for patients in need.”
