Crosland Southeast hopes to get permits for a project with residential and commercial uses in the Charlotte suburb of Matthews.

The developer is targeting 92.9 acres at 1700 E. John St. with its rezoning request. The request is being made to develop a project with 564 apartments, a 120-room hotel, 103 single-family homes, 48 townhomes and 54,000 square feet of retail/office space.

The Charlotte Business Journal reports the Matthews Board of Commissioners has put off their decision until early next year.

Crosland is eyeing a site just off Exit 52 of Interstate 485. The property is near Central Piedmont Community College’s Levine Campus and the Mecklenburg County Sportsplex at Matthews. Aspen Asset Group and the Yandle family own the land.

Crosland is the master developer of Eastland Yards, the former Eastland Mall site in Charlotte.

A Publix supermarket will anchor a 30-acre Durham mixed-use development that will feature 176 for-sale townhouse units, a 10-acre retail portion, which will include a 42,240-square-foot Publix, 12,580 square feet of retail space, outdoor dining, a courtyard, a food truck terrace and community park.

Crosland Southeast will develop the site, called Latta Park. It will include retail space with room for eight tenants, four of which will be local food and beverage concepts.

The Triangle Business Journal reports Crosland is investing $30 million to develop the retail and perform infrastructure improvements.

The company will start vertical construction on the retail in the first quarter of 2025 with delivery for tenant upfits a year later. The developer is anticipating having businesses open late spring 2026. Pre-leasing has already started.

Crosland Southeast has been chosen by the Charlotte Douglas International Airport to move forward on a deal to develop the city-owned Destination District Central property.

Destination District Central spans nearly 40 acres at Wilkinson Boulevard and North Josh Birmingham Parkway. The project would likely include multiple phases initially focused on retail and hospitality development.

Early plans call for 50,000 square feet of retail and two hotels totaling 300 rooms.

The Charlotte Business Journal reports the best case would see a groundbreaking there in early 2026. If a deal is reached and approved by City Council this winter, the entitlement process for the site would likely take 12 to 15 months. 

Crosland has worked with the city before, developing a master plan of Eastland Yards. Crosland is also behind major mixed-use projects like Commonwealth in Plaza Midwood and Waverly in south Charlotte.
