Charlotte Okays $650M for Panthers Stadium Upgrades
Charlotte City Council approved $650 million in public funds for renovations of Bank of America Stadium. The proposed renovation projects are estimated to cost $800 million. Of the $800 million, David Tepper, the owner of the Carolina Panther NFL football team, will pay nearly 20%, or about $150 million.
The facelift will include upgrades to the stadium and concessions, a new sound system and upgraded video and display boards. The 28-year-old stadium seats 75,000 people.
The city’s portion of the renovation funding will come from tax revenue dedicated to tourism-related projects. Neither Mecklenburg County nor the state are participating in the funding plan.
A portion of the funds will be used to build a new practice fieldhouse on 12 acres South Cedar Street next to the stadium.
